About the Designer - Layla Gijsen

Meet Layla Gijsen - designer, artist and clever key-cracker of social issues. She graduated from the Gerrit Rietveld Academy in 2023 (towards designLAB) and has been working at the intersection of design, activism and social experimentation ever since. Her work stimulates, invites participation and, meanwhile, asks sharp questions about the world around us.

For her graduation project Alternative Openings Layla delved into the world of locks, keys and ownership. Because she wants to show that possession, power and access are not as obvious as we think. She literally teaches visitors how to open locks without keys or codes to break out of stuck ideas.

Her style? Layered, graphically strong, and always with a twinkle in her eye. She enjoys working with risoprints, ceramics and spatial objects. Her installation is a mix of DIY instructions, beautifully designed materials and a generous helping of inviting curiosity.

Layla exhibited at the Gerrit Rietveld Graduation Show and collaborated on presentations during OBJECT Rotterdam and the Dutch Design Week. She is building a body of work that is as thought-provoking as it is poetic - and fits perfectly into FunFetti's creative world.
